Look Up: 3 Cosmic Signs Before the Rapture

Are You Ready?

The Bible tells us that one day Jesus Christ will return to gather His people. Although no one knows the exact day or hour, His return will be one of the most anticipated events in human history. For believers, it is our blessed hope: the day Jesus Christ returns to gather His Church so that we may be with Him forever. For an unbelieving world, however, the day of the Lord will signal that God's prophetic plan is unfolding exactly as He said it would.

Christians have long looked forward to Christ's return because Scripture also foretells a time of unprecedented deception, suffering, persecution, and judgment unlike anything the world has ever experienced. Scripture speaks of the rise of the “Antichrist”, the mark of the beast (666), the Great Tribulation, the opening of the seven seals, the sounding of the seven trumpets judgements, and the pouring out of the seven bowls of God's wrath. While Christians hold different views regarding the timing of these events and the gathering or “rapture” of the Church, they all share the same hope: Jesus Christ is coming again soon.

Jesus did not leave His followers without instruction. Instead, He told us to watch. He pointed to specific signs that would announce that His return was drawing near. Among the most notable are three cosmic signs that will command the attention of the entire world.

Those who know God's Word will recognize these unmistakable signs. Scripture repeatedly describes these heavenly disturbances that will cause the world to look up in either awe or terror. Some will recognize them for what they are, while others will not. Jesus said these visible signs would appear just before His return and the gathering of His people.

What are they?

Luke: The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars

In the book of Luke, Jesus tells us exactly where to keep watch. He points our attention to the heavens, the sun, the moon, and the stars, as the signs that will precede His return. Jesus said:

“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars;and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

Luke 21:25-28 (NKJV)

Jesus doesn't simply say people will be amazed by these signs. He says their hearts will fail from fear because they will realize that something far greater is about to happen on the earth. Matthew's Gospel echoes this same account, providing additional details about these cosmic events and the return of Jesus Christ.

Matthew: The Return of Jesus Christ

In the book of Matthew, Jesus describes many of the warning signs that will mark the beginning of the end times. Later, He specifically explains what will happen to the sun, the moon, and the stars immediately before His return.

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Matthew 24:29-31 (NKJV)

Once again, Jesus points our attention to the heavens. The darkening of the sun and moon, the falling of the stars, and the shaking of the powers of the heavens all occur immediately before His appearing and the gathering of His people.

Echoes Throughout Scripture

If we continue searching the Scriptures, we'll discover that these same cosmic events are echoed throughout both the Old and New Testaments, where they are reaffirmed and expanded upon by the prophets and the apostles.

Across both the Old and New Testaments, these passages use remarkably similar language, echoing one another and reaffirming that the sun and moon will be darkened and that the stars will fall from heaven. Several also mention the moon turning to blood and describe the stars or constellations withdrawing their light or radiance.

Together, they present a consistent prophetic picture of the cosmic signs that will precede the Day of the Lord and the return of Jesus Christ. Finally, the book of Revelation brings these prophetic signs together in one dramatic vision.

Revelation: The 6th Seal

In the book of Revelation, God gives the apostle John a series of prophetic visions about the end times. As the Sixth Seal is opened, John witnesses these cosmic events unfold:

I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake;

and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.

Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.

Revelation 6:12-14 (NKJV)

Just before the Seventh Seal is opened, he sees an innumerable multitude standing before the throne of God. They are from every nation, tribe, people, and language, worshiping God and the Lamb (Jesus) for their salvation.

"After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, 'Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!'"

Revelation 7:9–10 (NKJV)

Where did this sudden great multitude of people come from, and who are they? One of the elders answers this very question:

"These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."

Revelation 7:14 (NKJV)

The sequence is significant. Following the cosmic signs of the Sixth Seal, John sees an innumerable multitude standing before the throne in heaven. Their presence naturally raises the question: How did this great multitude of people arrive there?

Jesus had already said He would come to gather His people after these heavenly signs. John then records the opening of the Seventh Seal, followed by the seven trumpet and seven bowl judgments, which describe the outpouring of God's wrath upon the earth and those who remain.

The Powers of the Heavens Will Be Shaken

No one knows exactly what these three cosmic disturbances will look like until they happen, but one thing is certain, they will be impossible to ignore. Scripture repeatedly points to the sun, the moon, and the stars as the primary focus of these signs before Jesus returns. The very lights God placed in the heavens will suddenly become the world's greatest spectacle.

Our minds naturally think of a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse, or a meteor shower. But these events may be far more terrifying than anything humanity has ever witnessed. Imagine stepping outside in the middle of the day only to watch the sun suddenly lose its light. Imagine the moon glowing blood red for the entire world to see. Imagine the stars and constellations fading, falling, or disappearing from the night sky as the heavens themselves appear to unravel. The world will stop. Conversations will cease. Every eye will be drawn upward.

Scientists, astronomers, world leaders, news agencies, and people from every nation will search desperately for answers. Yet these will not be ordinary celestial events that can simply be explained away. Scripture says that "the powers of the heavens will be shaken." The sky will recede like a scroll. The nations will be overcome with fear and perplexity. The Creator of the universe will demonstrate His absolute authority over His creation.

After all, this is the same God who spoke the universe into existence with the words, "Let there be light" (Genesis 1:3). If He commands the sun to grow dark, the moon to become like blood, or the stars to lose their light, creation will obey. These cosmic signs will not merely be breathtaking displays in the heavens, they will be divine warnings that the return of Jesus Christ is at hand.

No one can predict exactly how God will accomplish these signs. They may involve supernatural acts, unprecedented celestial phenomena, or events beyond anything humanity has ever experienced. Whatever form they take, one thing is certain: the entire world will witness them, and no one will mistake their significance. The heavens themselves will proclaim that the King is about to return.

Caught Up: The Rapture

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.  Therefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4:16:18 (NKJV)

A Thief in the Night

The cosmic signs will leave no doubt that something extraordinary is taking place. Yet even after witnessing these signs, many will continue with life as usual, refusing to recognize what they mean. Jesus warned that His coming would catch the world by surprise. While His followers will be watching with anticipation, many others will remain spiritually unprepared.

Then, in a moment, at the sound of the trumpet, Christ will come on the clouds to gather His people, fulfilling His promise to those who have faithfully waited for Him. Paul echoes this same warning in 1 Thessalonians, describing the Day of the Lord as coming "like a thief in the night":

For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.

1 Thessalonians 5:2-5 (NKJV)

Paul continues by reminding believers that although the Day of the Lord will come suddenly like a thief in the night, Christians are not meant to be caught off guard. We are children of the light, called to remain watchful, sober, and ready. He also offers this comforting assurance: God has not appointed His people to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

No One Knows the Day or Hour

Jesus uses this same imagery when He teaches that no one knows the exact day or hour of His return. While He gives unmistakable signs to watch for, He also emphasizes that the precise timing remains known only to the Father. Until that moment, many people will continue living their everyday lives, eating, drinking, marrying, and working, just as they did in the days of Noah. Then, like a thief, Jesus will come in an instant to gather His people.

But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Matthew 24:36-44 (NKJV)

God’s Timing

With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.

Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar;

2 Peter 3:8-10

What's Taking So Long?

God's timing is different than ours. Before Jesus returns, His desire is for the message of the gospel to be proclaimed to as many people as possible throughout the world. His delay is not a sign of indifference, but of mercy, giving people every opportunity to repent, place their faith in Him, and receive the gift of eternal life.

The invitation still stands today. If you have never trusted in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, don't keep waiting. You never know when your last day will be. Turn to Him today, receive His forgiveness, and experience the hope, peace, and assurance that only He can give.

If you don't yet know Jesus, please know this: He loves you more than you can imagine. He is the Good Shepherd who leaves the ninety nine to search for the one lost sheep until He finds it. If you are far from God today, know that He is pursuing you with love and inviting you into a relationship with Him. Don't ignore His invitation. Come to Him today.

A Message of Hope

The study of the end times can sound unsettling because the events the Bible describes will be unlike anything the world has ever witnessed. Yet for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ, there is no reason to fear. Our hope has never been in this world; it has always been in Him. At the appointed time, Jesus will return, gather His people, and we will be with Him forever in perfect peace.

Perhaps the greatest purpose of studying Bible prophecy is not simply to understand what is coming, but to understand God's heart. Throughout Scripture, God warns people because He loves them. He is patient, merciful, and desires that every person would come to repentance and receive eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ. If there is anything to be concerned about, it is not merely the signs of the times, but whether you truly know Jesus Christ.

The incredible truth of the gospel is this: God knows everything about you, every mistake, every regret, every hidden sin, and He loves you anyway. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. He died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day so that everyone who repents and places their faith in Him can be forgiven and receive eternal life.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16

Salvation is not earned through good works or religious effort. It is God's free gift, received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Ephesians 2:8–9

The signs we've explored throughout this study are not meant to produce fear, but faith. They remind us that God's promises are true, His return is certain, and His invitation is still open today.

"...that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9

If you have never trusted in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, don't wait. Turn to Him today, receive His forgiveness, and experience the hope, peace, and assurance that only He can give.

A Prayer of Salvation

Heavenly Father,

I believe that Your Word is true. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He lived a perfect life, died on the cross for my sins, was buried, and rose again from the dead. I declare that Jesus Christ is my Lord. Thank You for loving me even while I was still a sinner. Thank You for sending Jesus to take my place so that I could be forgiven and reconciled to You.

Today I confess that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy. I repent of my sins, turn away from my old life, and surrender my life completely to You. Please forgive me, cleanse me from all unrighteousness, and make me spiritually new. Thank You for Your grace, Your mercy, and the forgiveness You freely offer through Jesus Christ.

Jesus, be my Lord, my Savior, and my King, today and forever. I place my trust in You alone for my salvation, not in my own goodness or works, but in Your finished work on the cross. Because of You, I am forgiven, redeemed, and set free from the penalty of sin, death, and hell. Today I receive the gift of eternal life and the promise of heaven.

Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Seal me as Your own. Transform my heart and teach me to follow You faithfully. Help me to love You with all my heart, walk according to Your Word, and live each day according to Your will. Cover me with the blood of Jesus, equip me with the full armor of God, and give me the strength to stand firm in my faith.

Thank You for adopting me into Your family, making me a new creation in Christ, and calling me Your child. I belong to You now and forever, and I gladly receive my place in Your Kingdom. I pray all of this in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen. Hallelujah!
